Doug Swanson (Trek/VW) won the Cable Criterium for a record fifth time in his trademark style – attacking hard, establishing a lead and soloing in for victory. Swanson, who holds the record time in the Chequamegon 40 but struggled in the longer race on Saturday, was glad to be back on form. “I was happy I could pull it off today,” Swanson said. “Yesterday, I felt good for about ten minutes at a time.

Jesrin Gaier (Specialized) made a late run at Swanson, edging out Swanson’s teammate Tristan Schouten for second. “I was feeling good the last two laps,” said Gaier, who got caught up in traffic on the technical course. “I think if I could have gotten (Swanson’s) wheel, I could have stayed with him.” But that never happened, as Gaier could only reel in Schouten on the last lap of the miss-and-out race.

Earlier in the day, Schouten nipped Swanson in a sprint finish in a qualifying race. Schouten is the only rider to beat Swanson in the Cable Criterium since 2001.

In the women’s race, Jenna Zander (Bear Naked/Cannondale) completed her sweep of the weekend in her first ever Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival. She held off Kyia Malenkovich (Headmethod/Cannondale) by half a second. Malenkovich has won the Cable Criterium four times in her career. SyRae Welkie of Boulder, Colo. placed third.

Swanson had good things to say about the new course, which featured two tight corners and two sharp uphills. “This was the best Sunday Funday course we’ve had so far. I just couldn’t quite see the 25,” Swanson said. The course was laid out to look like the number 25, commemorating the 25 anniversary of the race.

Michael Gerke, who has done all of the 25 Chequamegon Fat Tire Festivals, nearly won the 2007 Rough Stuff Rendezvous, an orienteering race in the woods around Telemark Resort. Gerke, who has won the event for four years, was edged out by John Manders. In the women’s Rough Stuff, Melissa Dupke won the event by over 20 minutes.

Winning the Chequamegon 40 is no easy task. But winning it on a singlespeed bicycle is unthinkable. That is until Jesse Lalonde (Gary Fisher 29/BKB) powered his way up last hard climbs in the closing miles and descended down into Telemark Resort alone in the lead, holding off former champions Brian Matter (PCW/Trek) and Steve Tilford (HRRC/Trek). And he did it with just one gear.

Lalonde rode a 36-16 gear on a rigid 29er, becoming the first rider to win the Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival on a singlespeed. “It was only a matter of time,” Lalonde said about his singlespeed win. Marko Lalonde, Jesse’s younger brother and teammate, finished fourth, also on a singlespeed. Their extraordinary rides in the 25th annual Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival illustrate that just one gear is all that’s needed to win a bike race.

In the women’s race, Susan Haywood (Trek/VW) looked set to win her second Chequamegon 40, when she pulled away on the Seeley Firetower Hill, building a gap of 30 seconds. She faded in the closing miles, however, getting caught and passed by Jenna Zander (Cannondale). Lea Davison (Trek/VW) also tagged onto the pair with about 500 meters to go in the race, but ended up in third.

A hard and fast course kept the field bunched together the entire race. “It was a super strategic race,” said Travis Brown (Trek/VW) who rode a cyclocross bike. “It would string out, then regroup, like a road race.”

According to Matter, who won the race in 2004, the course was “really fast”, which allowed a group of a dozen riders to stick together until Lalonde made his decisive move. “I should have been sitting on Jesse’s wheel. He was the guy to beat.”
The women’s race was also close, with the top three finishing within 15 seconds of each other.
